Dundee United continue winning League Cup start

Scott Fraser scores a penalty

Dundee United made it three Scottish League Cup first-round wins out of three with a home victory over Cowdenbeath in Group C.

Sam Stanton struck on the half-hour and Billy King fired United’s second just after the break.

Scott Fraser converted a penalty after Matty Smith had been fouled by Jamie Pyper.

Cameron Muirhead replied for Cowdenbeath but Smith netted from close range to complete the scoring.

United move three points clear of Dundee, with the city rivals meeting next Sunday at Dens Park.

Before then Dundee, who have two wins out of two, will play their third group game against Cowdenbeath on Wednesday.

Cowden have one win so far while Buckie Thistle, who lost at Dundee on Saturday, and Raith Rovers have no points.

The eight group winners and four best runners-up progress to the knockout stage where they are joined by the four teams in European competition – Celtic, Aberdeen, Rangers and St Johnstone.
